Medical Abortion Information

Abortion Pill

The abortion pill, or medication abortion, is typically offered up to 11 weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period. Unlike the name suggests, the pill actually consists of two drugs and is often taken in two separate doses, depending on how far your pregnancy has progressed. The first pill is used to end the pregnancy and to block the . The second pill is then taken to cause cramping and bleeding, which will empty and push out the contents of the uterus.

While the abortion pill is FDA-approved, the FDA does not recommend you purchase the abortion pill online. Abortion pills purchased online are not necessarily subjected to FDA regulations and guidelines and could be hazardous and detrimental to your health and safety.

Surgical Abortion Information

Aspiration

Also referred to as “Suction Abortion” or “Vacuum Aspiration Abortion”, Aspiration is performed between 5 to 12 weeks of pregnancy. During this procedure, a doctor will inject a numbing medication into your cervix by needle injection and will then use metal rods to stretch the cervix open. From there, a tube connected to a vacuum device will be inserted through the cervix into the uterus and suction is used to pull out the fetal tissues and remove them from the uterus.

Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)

Commonly known as “D&E”, this is a complex procedure performed between 12 to 21 weeks of pregnancy. This procedure is similar to Aspiration, however due to the increased size of the fetus, different surgical tools are used to remove the fetus. Depending on the size of the fetus, it may be removed intact or in pieces. Even if the fetus is intact, instruments are often used to crush the head in order to allow for it to fit through the cervix. Suction is then used to remove any additional tissues that may be left behind.
